Face lift for Altrincham Market
20/03/2006
It's all change for Altrincham Market due to a major revamp. The major refurbishment has already begun and will mean a big change for the historic market hall and the covered market.
The work being done on the market includes structural repairs, decorative work on the steel structure of the covered market, making good both the tiled and glazed roofs and incorporation of the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act to improve access.
Executive Councillor Stephanie Poole commented,
"We see Altrincham Market as a key attraction in the town centre renaissance and we are looking at ways of linking it to the new retail, commercial and leisure developments which are now underway. These works show a significant investment by the council and are expected to further enhance this rapidly changing part of Trafford.'
The work on the Market is expected to be finished later in the year and will be open for business as usual while the work goes on. Customers at the market will continue to receive the usual friendly service and good value that the Altrincham market traders always have on offer. The Superintendent and the Trader's Association will work closely with the contractor to minimise any inconvenience to customers of the market.
Market Superintendent, Paul Flannery underlined the council's commitment to the future of the market.
"We've steadily been improving the look of the market over the last year, but these works will make the place more welcoming and we expect to see trading activity increase in the future," he said.
